Kia ora!
I’m Alana Caunter, a passionate roller skating coach dedicated to helping people learn to skate confidently and safely. Skating has been a part of my life since I was seven years old, competing internationally until 18 years old.

My coaching journey is supported by extensive experience and qualifications. I hold a Bachelor of Social Work, a Diploma in Business Management, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Science. I also have World Skate-recognised Solo Dance Level 1 accreditation and New Zealand Federation of Roller Skating certifications in SSL1 Free Skating and SSL2 Solo Dance. In February 2023, I founded the Waitaha Artistic Roller Skating Club, creating a supportive space for skaters to compete in both national and international competitions. Coaching alongside internationally recognised coaches and skaters has further enriched my approach and deepened my commitment to supporting skaters of all levels.

I believe roller skating is not just a fun activity but also a  way to stay fit, build confidence, and connect with others. My coaching philosophy focuses on tailored support—whether you're stepping onto skates for the first time or refining your skills to reach the next level, I’ll work with you to create a plan that aligns with your goals.

Artistic Skating

Roller Skating for me started as an impulse buy during the 2020 lockdowns. Soon after, I began derby and moved through to skatepark and now coaching and beginning my artistic journey. Roller skating for me has begun a huge amazing part of my life, and I love the amazing people I have met through skating, and the incredible opportunities I’ve been given, like roller skating through a museum!

Roller skating for me has also been a huge improvement on my mental health. The ability to go out and just skate, not think about anything else and be getting exercise at the same time has been a huge help for me through some very stressful times in my life.

I love roller skating for the people, community and health benefits I’ve received, and can’t wait to keep on skating through some new journeys.

Just to introduce myself my name is Georgia.

I started my skating journey when I was in primary school but got serious at the age of sixteen.

I started in Ōtautahi with a juniors program. I have worked my way up the ranks and I have played roller derby internationally against some of the best players in the world.

I currently skate with Mana Tangata O Aotearoa (New Zealand Team Indigenous and Dead End Derby.) Canterbury Skating Academy is a new and exciting adventure for me.

In the past I have coached learn to skate and learn to roller derby classes. I have also coached clinics overseas. I have basic first aid training and I am police vetted.

I am so excited to meet more skaters and give back to the sport that has given everything to me.
